South Bruce Grey Health Centre is exploring an alternative option for the redevelopment of the Kincardine site.  In March 2012, the approved rebuild of the facility was cancelled by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.  Since that time, SBGHC has regularly sought clarification from the Ministry as to whether or not the project would move ahead.

Over two years has now passed and it is becoming increasingly evident that the Kincardine hospital needs a new and achievable solution for its aging infrastructure.  In an effort to try and move the project forward, a scaled down version of the initial plan has been put together, with a focus on redeveloping the existing building rather building a new facility.  The estimated cost is $22.5 million, one fifth of the original $105 million dollar cost.

The revised plan includes a new Emergency Department, Laboratory and Ambulatory Care area, and redeveloped space for Diagnostic Imaging and community stakeholders on the main floor.  A new basement area will also be added to house building services.

Despite the improvements that this redevelopment would make to the facility, the parts of the building that would be untouched are also in need of significant repairs to keep the building functioning.  An estimate of the required investment is being investigated at this time, but the initial evaluation is that this figure could be between $5-10 million, or perhaps higher.

The proposal for the scaled down redevelopment and funding for infrastructure repairs will be submitted to the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) this fall.  The plan has been endorsed by the SBGHC Board of Directors and Kincardine site stakeholder groups, such as our Department Managers, Physicians, and the Kincardine & Community Health Care Foundation.
