South Bruce Grey Health Centre’s High School Co-op Program offers focused opportunities in which students are primarily assigned to one department, and have opportunities to shadow in other departments to gain a broader understanding of the variety of roles in a health care facility. Students and staff members work together to ensure all participants gain maximum benefit from the program.

Students have the opportunity to:

  • Experience hands-on learning
  • Apply their classroom learning
  • Gain insights into the day-to-day responsibilities and happenings of the department
  • Develop essential skills and habits that are required in the workplace
  • Gain valuable experience to help build a resumé for post-secondary programs and future employment

Co-op options include:

  • Nursing: Emergency and Inpatient Care
  • Diagnostic Imaging: X-Ray, Ultrasound, Echocardiography and Respiratory Therapy
  • Facilities: Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC and General Maintenance

Additional Shadow Opportunities (Depending on availability):

  • Physiotherapy
  • Laboratory
  • Day Surgery 

Application Process:

  • Contact, or have your co-op teacher contact, the Volunteer & Human Resources Coordinator with area and site(s) of interest
  • Submit a cover letter and resumé explaining why you are interested in a co-op placement
  • Participate in a brief interview
  • It is recommended that students submit transcripts to accompany their applications

Requirements:

  • Completion of grade 11 required
  • Nursing: Biology and Chemistry
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Math
  • Facilities Rotation: Interest in the area 

What you will need to do before starting your co-op placement:

  • Complete a Health Review and submit to Occupational Health (Includes a Tuberculosis test and any appropriate laboratory tests or immunizations that may be necessary to be in hospital)
  • Review or complete and return all documents, policies and procedures in the Student Welcome Package
  • Participate in an Orientation and Training session (in-person or virtual)
