Medical Learner Testimonial – Robert Bradford
Robert Bradford, a medical student from Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine, recently completed a clerkship rotation at our Kincardine site. When asked for feedback on his rotation, here’s what Robert had to say:
“I learned a great deal about rural medicine from this rotation, my preceptor was fantastic and forthcoming with information about the realities, challenges, and rewards of rural practice.
This experience showed me the variety of cases rural physicians are expected to treat. I was shown the ER, which was enjoyable as I had little experience in a rural ER and got to see a high volume of cases during the summer with a variety of presentations. I also got to see the office work, and the rewarding working relationships doctors in the family practices in Kincardine have with their rural patients.
Overall, this rotation I think solidified my plans to do rural medicine when I graduate. I’m currently in the military’s medical officer training program, which will have me practicing all over the country when I graduate.
I’m sold on probably setting up a practice at SBGHC when my time in the military is at a possible end from that side of my career, as the area is stunning, and I really liked the patient population and the medical staff. I’m also a fan of the winter and growing up in Windsor makes one long for the wonders of Grey Bruce and its nature and snowfall.
Overall, SBGHC has a fantastic team in Kincardine who teach well and are welcoming to new faces. Thanks for the time, it was an honour. Hopefully, I will get back up there soon for residency training in some form or another.”
