SBGHC Welcomes Dr. Mitchell Currie to the Walkerton Physician Team
SBGHC is excited to officially welcome Dr. Mitchell Currie to our Walkerton Physician team!
Dr. Currie grew up in the Walkerton community, and after completing an undergraduate degree in biological science at the University of Guelph, a medical degree at the Saba University School of Medicine, and a family medicine residency at the University of Alabama, Dr. Currie has returned home with his newly wedded wife, Dr. Natasha Leva, to establish their medical careers within our community.
Over the last 5 months, Dr. Currie has been actively supporting the family practice of a local colleague on parental leave and regularly providing physician coverage in the Walkerton hospital tending to patients in the emergency department, rounding on inpatients, and providing surgical assist support in the operating room. We are pleased to hear that Dr. Currie is now in the process of establishing his own family practice and expanding access to primary care within the Brockton area. Dr. Currie will continue to support the Walkerton emergency department, inpatient unit and surgical program.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Currie enjoys traveling the world with his family, engaging in sports including hockey, soccer, golf, tennis, scuba diving and skiing, spending times outdoors, and reading.
When asked about how he feels to be returning to the community he grew up in, Dr. Currie stated: “I am very excited to finally be back in the community after being away for the better part of 8 years. I look forward to helping with the current physician shortage in the Brockton area. I also look forward to welcoming my Wife to the area as she sets up her Family medicine Practice in the near future.”
Dr. Currie will be accepting new patients from Brockton and the surrounding area to his family practice, and his team has organized a patient sign-up day on January 15, 2025, from 10:00am-2:00pm at the Walkerton Legion. For any inquiries regarding Dr. Currie’s family practice, please reach out directly to the Brockton Doctor’s Business Manager, Lindsay, at (226)285-0254, as the family practices of physicians are not directly associated with the hospital.
We recognize that there are a significant number of patients in the province without a family doctor, particularly in rural communities, and appreciate the frustration that comes with this. SBGHC feels extremely fortunate to be welcoming Dr. Currie to the SBGHC team, along with two additional new physicians over the next 6 months, to help expand access to primary care and enhance our local hospital services.
Please join us is providing Dr. Mitchell Currie with a warm welcome!
